This week, we walk through Matthew 12 and wrestle with a challenging question: what do we do when Jesus confronts our categories? As the Pharisees accuse the disciples of breaking the Sabbath, Jesus exposes the danger of rigid, rule-based religion that misses the heart of God. Through Scripture and powerful logic, He reveals that human need matters, that He is greater than the temple, and that the Sabbath was meant to bring life.

At the center of it all is Jesus’ words: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” We see that God isn’t after empty religious performance, but hearts marked by compassion and love. As Jesus heals on the Sabbath, He doesn’t just teach mercy, He demonstrates it.

This teaching invites us to first receive that same mercy in our own areas of shame, struggle, and weakness—and then to extend it outward in our everyday lives. The question we’re left with is simple, but searching: are we marked more by religion, or by mercy?
