“When Goliath arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine” (I Samuel 17:48).
The story of David and Goliath is a familiar one to most of us. The young shepherd’s defeat of the Philistine giant has captivated audiences, young and old, both Christian and secular, for generations. But in all of the retellings, a key element of this underdog story is often overlooked. David did not timidly approach the battle with the giant, he boldly ran toward the danger.
In the same way, Christians are not to shy away from the battles of our day, nor approach them with timid hearts. We have been
strategically equipped, uniquely positioned, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, so that we may be more than conquers in this world for the cause of the Gospel of Christ.
Lurking outside of our doors are the present-day giants of Covid19, racial and political unrest, etc. If we keep our eyes on the giants, we will find ourselves gripped with fear, wanting to run and hide. But if we will fasten our eyes on Jesus and daily seek solace and direction from God’s Word we will be equipped to face the giants that surround us, day in and day out.
I would also encourage you to not venture out until you clothe yourselves with the Whole Armor of God that is found in Ephesians 6:10-20. Once clothed and holding high the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God, and the Shield of Faith, by which we may extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one, we will be able to withstand the assaults of an evil day and stand firm amid the shifting sands around us.
